Six years after the Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, environmental problems have increased. The current situation, in spite of some encouraging actions, is not better than in 1992.

The provisions of Agenda 21, adopted in Rio, are far from being implemented, thus the need to change the course of action towards international cooperation that would allow entering the 21st century with better perspectives.

Due to all the above-mentioned, the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment of the Republic of Cuba and the Havana International Conference Center are hereby convening the 2nd International Convention on Environment and Development, to be held at the City of Havana on 14-18 June 1999.

We kindly invite you to participate in this 2nd Convention, which as the first one is aimed at politicians, managers, educators, scientists, professors, technicians, community leaders, farmers, entrepreneurs and all those who consider that sustainable development constitute the main objective on the next century.

Based on the diversity of the participants each event will be characterized by an assorted scope of subjects.

The Convention will also offer an opportunity for the participants to have debates on urgent environmental topics, related to the economy, social reality and nature.

To this end, three round tables will be held in which important personalities will make presentations on the main topics of the Convention, paving the way to establish a trans-disciplinary exchange on different environmental sectors, that will help establish a comprehensive view on these subjects.

The Convention will be sponsored by the Cuban Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment and the Havana International Conference Center, co-sponsored by the Ministry of Public Health of Cuba, the Cuban Ministry of Economy and Planning, the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources, and international bodies like UNEP, UNESCO and FAO.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

In the case of lectures, symposia and free-topic paper presentations, paper abstracts should be received by the Scientific Committee not later than April 15, 1999.

A 250-word abstract, 1.5 space typed on a 205 x 280 mm sheet of paper, leaving a 2-cm margin on four sides, including: introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion and conclusions.

Abstracts shall be preferably sent through E-Mail or Fax. They shall be delivered to the Organizing Committee during the event in one 3 î diskette, using Word or Word Perfect word processing systems.

CALL FOR FREE-TOPIC PAPERS

Papers may be submitted as oral, poster or video presentations. Oral Presentations may be supported by graphics, slides and transparencies. Posters should be 0.95 wide and up to 1.5 m high. They should include: introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion and conclusions. Video format should be B etamax or VHS (NTSC 3.58 standard).
