EUROPEAN JOURNALISM FELLOWSHIPS October 2002 - July 2003, Berlin

The process of European unification will require journalists to report on all European countries more extensively in the years ahead. This implies establishing broader networks and cultivating deeper sensibilities for neighbouring countries. It is the aim of the European Journalism Fellowships to help prepare media professionals for this increasingly challenging task.

Every year, approximately ten to fifteen first-rate journalists from Eastern and Western Europe as well as the United States are invited to study at Berlin universities. Participants can thus take a two-semester sabbatical in the middle of their professional lives - a chance to deepen and refresh their knowledge. They have the rare opportunity to do in-depth research on a particular subject and to explore the broader contexts of the field of journalism in which they work, be it politics, economics, science or culture.

During their year in Berlin, journalistic investigation merges with scholarly inquiry. Sponsors of the European Journalism Fellowships thus make a serious investment in the quality of journalism

Participants must be able to leave their media organizations for two semesters and spend one sabbatical year at the Freie Universitaet of Berlin in the pursuit of knowledge and major research projects.

The program starts in October 2002 and ends in July 2003. Highly qualified journalists, in both full and free-lance employment, with several years of professional experience, are entitled to apply. The most important element of the application is a proposal for a scientific-journalistic project, which is to be pursued in Berlin.

Journalists interested in the program apply directly to the European Journalism Fellowship Program in Berlin. In order to apply for admission, prospective students have to submit the following type-written documents, using German or English language: * completed application form * curriculum vitae * copies of academic diplomas, certificates etc. * two letters of recommendation (in English or German) * a selection of articles, books, or other samples of applicant's work * proof of knowledge of the German language (if available) * a proposal for the individual research project the applicant wishes to realize in Berlin (3 up to 5 sides).

Applications via fax or e-mail are not valid. Deadline for application is October 31, 2001
